It was orignially created in September 2016, and has experienced many different iterations. Paean once featured three tribes-- who may or may not return-- and a whole lot of worldbuilding; it is our hope that its newest form delivers in terms of quality!
We offer a detailed history, frequent plots and plenty of character-- all at After Dawn hope to see you join!

The camp stood lush and green, foliage sprouting out of every available corner. Summer had been kind to the cats of ThunderClan, lending them full stomachs and warm pelts. The camp was peaceful and quiet, only occasionally broken by the gentle chatter of the elders or a songbird piping out its song. A gray mass lay near to its companions, appearing to be sleeping. In reality, Sootymask was planning his latest escapade, a slight smirk hidden by his tail. Slate-blue eyes opened at slits, allowing him to observe the environment while still preserving his stealth. He was waiting for the perfect target: A sleepy, unsuspecting feline that happened to wander out in front of him. Shadows flitted at the edge of his vision, caused by his companions as they roused themselves from their dreams. A soot-coloured tail flicked in excitement, which he quelled as to not draw attention to himself. Light from the rising sun filtered into the camp, illuminating the surroundings and casting everything into a golden hue. Finally, a shadow lumbered by him; a clanmate, ripe for the pouncing. Without much noise, Sootymask released the tension in his legs, sending the moderately fluffy tom flying towards the unwitting target. A childish laughter erupted from the feline as he landed on his prey. "Gotcha!" He chirped as he rolled of the bewildered cat. Slate hues sparkled with a kitten-like energy, something he had not lost as he grew up. With a shallow swish of his tail, he sat down, raising a paw to his mouth to groom himself. "So, how're you today?" He asked nonchalantly, going on to groom himself.

Her dark gray ears flicked to attention just a split second before the large gray figure hurled himself at her, which was quite the mistake--Ebonysky had always had quite the temper, and she never took joking lightly. A hiss of irritation came spitting through her teeth, her dark ears flattening against her head as she was knocked just slightly to the side, the tom atop her. "Get off of me, you mouse-brained idiot!" She snapped immediately, shaking out her white-speckled gray fur and glaring daggers at the tom as soon as he'd gotten off of her. Her tail was fluffed out and lashing in her aggravation, and her violet-colored eyes were narrowed harshly. She eventually managed to calm herself, sitting down stiffly and trying to regain her dignity by smoothing down her ruffled fur with her rough pink tongue. Her head snapped back up slightly at his question, and she rolled her eyes in a dramatically sarcastic manner. "I'd been doing just fine, before some maniac decided to attack me!" She retorted, her eyes still flashing with annoyance. She then paused, before huffing. "...And how are you?" She muttered, her voice tense with bitter politeness.
With the sudden hiss and fuss of the enraged she, Soot backed up a few pawsteps, fluffed gray fur appearing along his spine and tail. He soon regained his composer, though, trademark smirk reappearing amongst his mask. Some said he looked like a raccoon, and acted like one, too. He smoothed down the freckled fur along his back with a few quick rasps of his tongue, looking with amusement at the feline in front of him. Quite frankly, he found reactions like this adorable. The tom looked up into the sky, smiling as he focused on the dancing leaves situated above his head. “You’re really going to be this grumpy when its so beautiful outside?” He chuckled, bringing his attention back to Ebony. “Sweetie, I’m not a maniac! Im just looking for a bit of fun, is all. Lighten up!” He talked like everything was made of sunshine, like everyone had a heart of gold. “Oh, yeah!” A slightly embarrassed look rested on his face, as he had just forgotten he had asked that question. “I’m doing great! Albeit, tired, but isn’t everyone at this time of morning?” A purr erupted from his throat, almost without a cue. “Looks like you’re lightening up a bit now! Almost there~” The fickle tom could come off as flirtatious, but in reality, he wasn’t trying to be. Charming and flirty are two different things, and while he may not be charming, he was, even if on accident, flirty. “Oh, yeah, sorry for scaring you!”

Her lip curled rather negatively at him, hunching her shoulders slightly with her fluffy gray tail lashing irritably. "I don't care about the weather, fluffbutt." She snorted softly, rolling her eyes once more. She appeared to do that a lot. As the tom rambled on, she licked a paw, drawing it carefully over her dark ears and eyeing him with something between disdain, annoyance, and vague curiosity glittering in the depths of her violet eyes. She growled quietly, her lip curling noticeably. "Don't call me sweetie." She ordered, her tail lashing again before finally managing to calm herself again. "I don't like lightening up, if you haven't noticed, so I'd suggest not assuming that I will." She yawned subtly as he continued to speak, moving briefly to the fresh-kill pile and snatching out a mouse, carrying it carefully in her teeth and sitting across from the cheerful tom again. The only sign that she was listening while chowing down on her mouse was the occasional flick of her ears, which were pointed in his direction. "I'm never tired at this time of the morning. It's just you." She mumbled bluntly around the mouse stuffed into her cheeks, swallowing and glaring at him once more. "I'm not... Whatever." She gave in to his cheerful words with a sigh and a flick of her tail, shrugging her lean shoulders. "You didn't scare me." She then protested quickly, gritting her teeth. "I don't get scared. I just don't." Of course, this wasn't true. Plenty of things frightened her. She just enjoyed pretending to be fearless.
Gray-Blue eyes sparkled from behind a dark gray mask, focused on the irritated she that, for some reason, continued to stick around. "Hey! I'm not a fluffbutt!" He jokingly protested, laughing. He was fluffier than average, though. "I could say the same to you." He said with a smirk, accentuating it with a flick of his tail. "Really, though, the weather is nice out here!" Everything was nice to Sooty. Even this cat, who to others may seem completely unapproachable. He just enjoyed making people smile, no matter how hard he had to try to get there. At least she wasn't completely done with his cheerfulness yet. "There's always something worth lightening up about!" As she got up, he assumed she was finally tired of his shenanigans, and so he let his mind wander outside the camp walls. Succulent prey came to mind, and he was almost able to smell it. Almost- Sooty opened his eyes, welcomed by the sight of Ebonysky, and not only that, but with a mouse seated by her paws. "Oh hey! You can back!" He chirped, the mouse now having completely vanished from his mind. This made him genuinely happy, as he hadn't expected that to happen. "I thought you got tired of me." The cheerful tom said with a chuckle. His trademark smile rested on his face, wrapping his tail around his multi-coloured paws. "You must be an early bird then. I'm always at least a little tired during this time." A yawn, almost if as on cue, split his jaws, showing the extent of his tiredness. "You really don't get scared. Okay, well, I'm not scary at all, but there's gotta be other things!"

Having finished almost all of her mouse, she eventually shoved the remainder over to the excitable, cheerful tomcat with a heavy sigh, seating her head on her paws and watching him sharply as he rambled on. And on. And on. "I am tired of you. I'm simply bored of everything else in this Clan, too." She retorted with a flick of her tail, rolling her violet eyes. She shifted her face slightly, and on the right side of her face, crossing over her glittering eye, are a few clawmarks. They're long since healed, but are still a rather... daunting sight. She flicked her tail a bit, beating it softly against the ground to loosen the dirt and dust from her fur. "...The trick is that I don't sleep." She mewed bluntly, shrugging her lean shoulders and not looking at the tomcat. It was less like she was avoiding his gaze... and more like she simply didn't find him interesting enough to look at. Her gaze flit to his sharply at his last comment, teeth set on edge as she watched him. "Of course there are some things I'm afraid of. But you're not going to find out. And don't try, because I'll very quickly tear you to pieces if you try to frighten me." Her words had a bite to them, her eyes narrowed harshly as she stared him down. "Got it?"
Soot's mouth watered as the mouse was pushed underneath his muzzle, savoury aromas wafting up into the air. He didn't mind eating after her, after all, prey still had to be shared. He dug in, blood faintly glimmering along his muzzle as he finished the rodent off, licking his lips to rid himself of the blood. Dark ears pivoted towards the feline to pick up on any stray comments she may decide to mutter under her breath. Hurt sparkled int the tom's eyes at her next comment, quickly covered up as he resumed his happy demeanour. "So, you don't like anyone?" He inquired, tipping his soot-coloured head to the side. He wasn't affected by the appearance of her scars, having lived long enough and having seen enough cats to have been exposed to this many, many times. "You don't sleep? Really?" He looked sceptical, but as always, he retained an atmosphere of humour. His slate hues bored into the back of her head, almost as if daring her to look at him. "You have to sleep sometime. I've heard of cats dying from lack of sleep." His fur fluffed up at Ebony's sudden glare, sending a burst of adrenaline through his body. "Woah, woah, hey, I'm not gonna try you." He said with a nervous laugh. "I'm not like that."
It was rather wintry for a late new-leafs evening. Occasionally a soft, sudden breeze would catch Badgerstar off guard and chill him to the bone. He shuddered, nestling himself deeper into his fur as he lazed in the warmth of his moss laden den. As per usual, he was isolating himself from the rest of the clan, trying to avoid idle conversation and, really, anything to do with other cats. socializing was not his strong suit; often he'd end up either just getting mad or ignoring them anyway, so why pursue it?
He buried his muzzle into his feather lined nest, grunting stubbornly. eventually he'd have to go out and share tongues, else the clan think he was a hermit. Wait, why did he care again? oh. right. he had responsibilities now. Badgerstar yawned dramatically and stretched his stiffened legs. It was either now or never, though the latter he'd prefer. The great grey tom arose-rather lazily and sauntered out of the dismal gloom of his cave, the sun briefly blinding his tired eyes.
His nose and his hunger lead him over to the fresh-kill pile, where a plump magpie awaited his rumbling belly. He felt his mouth water with anticipation. With a little bit more life, Badgerstar snatched it up in his jaws and brought it away into the shade of a nearby oak. As he dug into it's soft, upturned underbelly, a raggedy elder strayed over to him, her warm amber eyes acknowledging him thoughtfully. "Good evening," she greeted him with a hospitable bow of the head, "It's a pleasant surprise to see you so lively." She offered as she glanced at the patch of grass beside him. Badgerstar nodded and she plopped herself down next him, reaching over to lap at his matted fur.
"I've just not been sure.."
"About what?" The elder questioned, not in the least bit surprised.
"Since the last gathering." he finished, sighing audibly.
"I understand. Something so sudden, how could you have been ready?" She mewed softly next to his ear, her tone kindly and sincere. "Maybe it's best if you just try to empty your mind."
[There was a minute of silence as Badgerstar took her suggestion in, but the loud protest of a nearby she-cat tore apart the quiet. HE grumbled, visibly agitated. The elder molly noticed this and looked concerned.
"Young ones." She nudged him. "Why don't you talk to them. It would be good for you to get to know your clan."
Badgerstar looked unconvinced.
"What is a leader that doesn't know their own kin?" She urged.
He hesitated momentarily before smirking and rising to pad over to the two quarreling warriors, his harsh, menacing glare looking them over. "Hey." He called, his deep, gruff voice booming over their bickering.
"Is there trouble?" He asked expectantly, his gaze shifting between them.

Ebonysky rolled her eyes to the heavens, staring up at the sky as if asking StarClan, "why me?" before glancing back down at Sootymask, a rather sarcastic expression on her muzzle. "You finally caught on!" She mewed with fervent scorn in her tone. "No, I don't like anyone!" Of course, this was another lie--but it was early, and his cheerfulness irked her. She was the type who needed coffee to get going in the morning--except there was no coffee in the forest, and she didn't even know what coffee was. She snorted at his inquiry, shaking her head. "Yes, I sleep. Just not much. I never feel... safe." She admitted, shrugging her shoulders casually, as if this didn't necessarily bother her. She looked satisfied at his startled claim, nodding her head a few times. "Good, I would suggest keeping to that idea. I don't take kindly to being frightened." She flashed her teeth at him in slight warning, before her fur went flat and she went back to semi-contently listening to him ramble. That is, until she saw Badgerstar approach. She didn't move much, besides lifting her head slightly, her violet eyes assessing him closely before seemingly deciding she approved of the newer leader. "Badgerstar, good morning." Her tone hadn't changed much from her quiet voice, but at least she didn't sound sarcastic. "There's nothing wrong, Fluffbutt here just thought it'd be a good idea to hunt cats."Now there was a light hint of subtle sarcasm to her words, and she fought to keep from rolling her eyes.
Thin tendrils of gray and black fur blew in the wind as it swept past the pair, causing Sootymask to give a slight sneeze. He laughed it off, wiping his dark gray nose with a paw. He shivered as the cold finally sunk through his fur, smoothing it down as it decided to stay in the cowlick-like position the wind left it in. "Well, you have to like some cats, at least. Or else you'd be lonely." Honesty, Sooty couldn't imagine ever being without his Clan, without their chatter and purrs and support. He'd been here all his life, and he wouldn't have it any other way. Hearing her comment about sleep, he gave a worried frown, about to lay his tail on her but then thinking better of it. "Sweetie, you really should sleep more. And what's not to feel safe about? The Clan's got your back!" He chirped with a chuckle. He really just wanted to help her, as she seemed just so... lonely. He never wanted anyone to be like that. "Well, sometimes being scared can be fun! The rush, really." He scooted micrometres closer to her, almost unnoticeable. Except to the grouchy feline, probably, it seemed like he moved a mountains distance instead. His mind was just about to wander away from the conversation again when a sonorous voice split the air, drawing his attention once more. "Oh, hey Badgerstar! Glad to see you out of your den!" The tom purred. Giving an indignant huff at her comment. "I'm not a fluffbutt!" Sooty protested, proceeding to fluff up his fur, only negating his previous comment. "And pranks aren't actually hunting."
Badgerstar grumbled, subtly shaking his head in a mix of disappointment and disbelief. Their ceaseless whining; it was like the squealing of kits.. And over something so painfully petty. His temples began to hurt. Maybe I should've just stayed in my nest. He thought regrettably.
He snorted at them indignantly, his brows furrowed into a stern glare. "Warriors don't bicker like kits." His nub of a tail twitched irritably. "And they certainly don't fool around one." He growled, leaning in to nearly butt heads with Sootymask, his scraggly whiskers nearly tickling his face. "Are you not warriors?"
Badgerstar took a moment to lower his temper. The old tail-chaser was right, he needed to strengthen the bonds between him and his clan. He needed their trust.
He exhaled deeply, recollecting himself. From what he'd seen these warriors were vastly different from each other. One was rather bubbly and energetic. The other.. well, perhaps the polar opposite. fire and ice were clashing and he needed to gain both of their approval. how would he go about this? It was time to think.
Badgerstar relaxed his shoulders and sat down, flicking his ears patiently. "let's not argue." He huffed, exasperated. "How about a little spar? looser has to eat a rotten mouse." He gestured toward the discarded pile of prey that had gone bad.
when the lights shut off and it's my turn To settle down, my main concern Promise that you will sing about me
The mornings were always worse for him, and the salty smell of change stung in Ternfang's nose. He was, to say the least, pissed off. First the flood, and now this? His Clan merely hoisting the 'most experienced' warrior into place? Tern wouldn't've been quite as irked if said warrior was his father.
Badgertooth. He'd always remember him as Badgertooth-- he'd not listen to the hushed whispers, the warnings to not forsake Starclan's gifts. Ternfang would do what he wanted, and that was that: they couldn't take away his freedom, no, that'd be a violation of Starclan's gift.
Damn, did he love the religiosity of his Clanmates.
Nonetheless, he flattened his ears against his head, and strolled out into camp, the sun's rays pressing its fingers into his thick pelt. There were better things to do than to fuss over nothing, and he'd do his best to make today.. productive, at least. That was all you could do in the face of adversity. Even if he didn't care for their leader, he still knew Thunderclan was facing hard times. Narrowing his eyes and plodding over to the three shapes over in the shade, Tern blinked once, twice, before he registered the scent he'd been approaching. He just couldn't catch a break...!
In spite of everything, he shook his fur and smoothly began, "So I couldn't help to overhear something about a spar..."
Large paws moved to wash his pelt in an attempt to cool himself down; fluffy dark fur and prolonged greenleaf sun were not a good combination. Sooty remained completely calm in the face of the grumpy leader, after all, he was just another warrior, wasn't he? Besides, sometimes being nice was all a grumpy cat needed. Gray-tipped ears flicked occasionally during the leader' drawling speech to show he was paying attention. Soot had gotten this many times before, he knew this lecture by heart now. What caught him off guard was the headbutt. An alarmed screech escaped his parted jaws, causing the tom to take a dramatic fall backward. He didn't really need to, it was more so for comic relief. Springing right back up and shaking out his fur for good measure, Sooty's slate blue eyes never failed to have a humorous spark twinkling in their depths. He bore no resentment, after all, a game was a game. But Badgerstar brought up an even more interesting game. "Yeah! A spar would be awesome!" He turned towards Ebonysky, who still had her signature look of bored disgust. "Don't you think so?"

Ebony's tail flicked rhythmically as she listened to Badgerstar speak--almost lecture--and groaned inwardly, shaking her head. "You are a fluffbutt." She murmured to Sootymask, though her face had a hint of teasing in it--maybe she was warming up to the tom, just a little. She bit her lip as Badgerstar continued to speak, her ears flattening slightly against her skull. "...We aren't kits..." She murmured defensively, but had the dignity to look a bit ashamed. She shook her head, fluffing out her fur a bit before staring Badgerstar down, tilting her head to the side at his offer. She did love sparring--she was a fighter, not a stand-by. She loved keeping active, showing she was a worthy warrior; and besides, she was a bit pent-up at the moment. She looked to Sootymask, smiling despite herself before coming quickly to her paws and crouching down, a sparkle of excitement in her purple eyes. "Sounds like a ton of fun--if I win, I get to call you fluffbutt." She joked, practically bouncing. This was right up her alley--good going there, Badgerstar. She glanced up at the sound of another voice, tilting her head to the side and eyeing down the newcomer with a slightly wary glance. "Uh... Yeah, sparring. It was Badgerstar's idea." Her violet eyes glittered, though she'd managed to keep a slightly indifferent look on her face now. "Why, you wanna join us?"
